  • Historic blue plaque to make a comeback in West Bengal

  • The historic blue plaque is going to make a comeback in Bengal after a gap of five years. Since the British period, Bengal has had a tradition of blue enamel plaques being installed to honour names of lanes and buildings of historic importance.

  • The return of the plaques will re-establish Bengal’s ties with France and England – the two countries where blue plaques are frequently installed. From February onwards, the Commission is going to install the new plaques at seven heritage buildings in Chandernagore that have a French connection.

  • The trend of installing blue plaques was started by the British and continued even after independence.

  • The seven heritage buildings that will be the first recipient of the blue plaques are the Sacred Heart Church, Rakshit Bhavan, Library Gate, Registry Office, Kanailal Vidyamandir, Kanailal Vidyamandir French section and Chandernagore College.

  • Constructed in the 19th century, Rakshit Bhavan is one of the very few French houses in Chandernagore. It is a double storeyed large building with designed landscape, water bodies, stable, garage etc. The main entrance features a cast iron porch.

  • Library Gate was the gateway into the city along the Grand Trunk Road constructed in 1937 to commemorate the fall of Bastille. The gate bears the name Chandernagore. Themes of the French revolution Egalite (equality), Liberte (liberty) and Fraternite (fraternity) are etched on the posts of the gate.
