RAJASTHAN

  • Now, viral load test for HIV patients at three state hospitals

  • Rajasthan will get machines at its three medical colleges to test the HIV/AIDS patients for viral load — a medical test that measures the amount of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in a person’s blood. The patients in state earlier had to go to New Delhi to get tested.

  • Three viral load testing machines will be set up at government medical colleges in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. The machines, each costing Rs 90 lakh, are being supplied by National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and the process of installation is on and they will start functioning from next month.

  • The HIV targets and destroys CD4 cells that strengthen immunity in a person. With higher HIV count, the CD4 cell count will fall and result in reduction in immunity. Earlier antiretroviral therapy (ART), which prevents the growth of the virus, was started when CD4 cell count was less than 500 cells per cubic milliliter.

  • The ART suppresses the HIV and increases the CD4 count. If CD4 count continues to fall despite the ART then viral load test is done.

  • There were only 10 viral load testing machines across India and HIV/AIDS patients of Rajasthan were sent to Delhi or Ahmedabad for viral load testing. If viral load was found to be more than 1000 copies/mm in blood then second line of ART is started.

  • The state has 23 ART centres and 25 link ART centres, 184 integrated counselling and treatment centres. The state has estimated 1.03 lakh people living with HIV/AIDS.
